Lot Essay

Barye offered five different versions of Basset, all of them modelled in 1841. The present version was offered from 1845 as the pendant to Basset debout, tête tournée à gauche. Lifetime casts of both models were few in number, and after 1876, the right-facing version was edited by the Graux-Marly foundry.

Another cast of this model, formerly in the collection of Eduardo Guinle (d. 1841), was sold in these rooms, 25 April 2003, lot 46 ($13,145).
