A CARVED POLYCHROME LACQUER RUYI
QING DYNASTY, 17TH/18TH CENTURY

Deeply and finely carved through three layers of lacquer of cinnabar red, green and yellow tone, the ruyi-shaped terminal depicting the Daoist Immortal, He Xiangu, holding a lotus spray over one shoulder set within a landscape, the arched shaft with a shaped panel enclosing a bat in flight, suspending from its mouth a beaded chain attached to a wan symbol attached to a musical stone, all against a diamond-diaper ground, the reverse side carved with an elaborate floral pattern (age cracks, minor losses)
