The Case Edo Period (19th Century), the Flute Momoyama Period (Late 16th-Early 17th Century)
The case, black lacquer ground decorated in takamaki-e of two colours gold depicting a sosho poem, the base of the case with a silver ventilation grill in the form of fans in a rotary arrangement, the interior lined with silk, the risers and rims fundame, the flute bound with narrow strips of cherry-wood bark at both ends and between the holes, the top of the instrument plugged with paper-wrapped pewter coated in wax, the outer end of the plug covered with brocade, the waxed end stopping inside the tube, just short of the mouth-hole, the interior red lacquer
