SPILBERGHEN, Joris van (1568-1620). Speculum orientalis occidentalisque Indiae navigationum. Leiden: Jodocus Hondius for Nicolaus á Geelkercken, 1619.
Oblong 4° (180 x 143mm). Large engraved title vignette, folding engraved world map [Shirley 304] and 24 engraved views, maps and plans including 2 folding maps, 2 double-page maps, one folding view and one double-page view. (Numerous small neat repairs, world map with old worming repaired along central vertical fold and with small sections of map supplied in manuscript facsimile, similar repairs to folding map of Indonesia, some general light worming.) CONTEMPORARY VELLUM GILT BOUND FOR KING CHARLES I AS PRINCE OF WALES, covers panelled in gilt with outer border of double fillets, the inner border with stylised thistle-heads at corners, the large central panel with blocked cornerpieces including a bleeding heart motif, all surrounding the large centrally-placed arms of Charles, Prince of Wales, flat spine in compartments divided by triple fillets, each with single centrally-placed flowerhead, top edge gilt (some staining and rubbing to covers, later ties and endpapers).
FIRST EDITION IN LATIN BOUND BETWEEN 1619 AND 1625 FOR KING CHARLES I AS PRINCE OF WALES. Van Spilberghen, in command of a small flotilla of six Dutch East India Company ships, sailed for the Moluccas via the Straits of Magellan in 1614, managing to show that it was possible to reach Java from the east via Cape Horn. The above work is an account of his five year voyage, the engravings consisting of charts, views of ports, islands and native peoples, and sea battles, all of which must have fascinated the future king.
