CHARLES I (1600-1649) BINDING -- The Booke of Common Prayer ... for the Use of the Church of Scotland, edited by William Laud. [The Psalter or Psalmes of David]. Edinburgh: Robert Young, 1637-1636.
2 parts in one volume, 2° (317 x 212mm). Title and calendar in red and black. Largely in black letter with 12- to 2-line woodcut initials and printer's ornaments. (Title soiled, kk1-2 tattered at outer margin.) Contemporary calf gilt, probably Edinburgh, single lozenge-roll border within double blind fillets, double lozenge-roll panel BLOCKED IN GILT WITH THE ROYAL ARMS OF CHARLES I AS KING OF SCOTLAND, large ribbon and foliage blocks at inner corners, fleurons at outer corners, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands and repeated scrollwork tool, gilt edges, proof sheets of signature ee preserved at the end and evidently taken from the binding (top spine compartment restored, lower joints slightly split, lacking ties, front pastedown and free endpaper renewed, lacking rear free endpaper). Cloth case. Provenance: John Lebon 1638 -- John Leaver -- Mary Cave (early ownership signatures on title and preliminaries).
FIRST EDITION OF THE SCOTTISH PRAYER BOOK IN A ROYAL BINDING. The appearance of this prayer book, imposed by Laud on unwilling Scottish Presbyterians, contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War, and ultimately led to the deaths of both Laud and Charles. The psalms were largely translated by William Alexander, Earl of Sterling. In this copy the separate title to the Psalms, dated 1636, is a variant lacking the word 'Pointed' and with line 9 ending in 'throughout.' kk7-8 are cancelled as in most copies, and kk6v has the catch-word 'Certaine' inked over by the printer. Another setting of the Psalter is recorded in STC 16607 which has no catch-word on kk6v. Quires A and C-E and leaf hh3 are in at least two partial or complete published settings. Paul Morgan in 'Some Bibliographical Aspects of the Scottish Prayer Book of 1637,' The Bibliotheck V (1967), pp. 1-23, discusses the identification of suppressed settings and proof sheets found as binding fragments. Another example of the same Royal binding on the same work occurs in Maggs Catalogue 1075, 1987, pp. 52-53. STC 16606.
