A PAIR OF GILT-BRONZE PROFILE PORTRAIT RELIEFS OF CHRIST AND THE VIRGIN
French or Italian, late 17th century
Set on a rectangular ground inscribed 'par P Puget' and in a gilt- bronze frame with a putto's mask with suspension loop above, the reverse inscribed 'de la collection de Leone Granet ...Roquemaure acquis en 1920 par Robert le ..... de Biot..(?)'.
Some wear to gilding; the bust of Christ loose.
4¼ in. (10.8 cm.) high, each bust
7¾ x 9 3/8 in. (19.7 x 23.8 cm.) the frame

Lot Essay

Although the present reliefs do not correspond directly to any documented works by Puget, the image of the Virgin shows certain stylistic similarites to a drawing executed by Puget, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Marseilles (see Marseilles, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Pierre Puget, 28 October 1994 - 30 January 1995, no. 69, pp. 192-193).
