A RECTANGULAR CARVED WOOD ALLEGORICAL RELIEF WITH THE YOUNG APOLLO AND DIANA
Flemish, late 17th or early 18th century
Apollo seated at a table with gardening tools at his side, Diana covering a sleeping child, with the sun rising and birds in the sky above, the reverse of the panel with several indistinct chalk drawings, in a carved wood frame.

Lot Essay

The bas-relief of youthful putti, framed by flower-entwined Roman acanthus leaves, evokes the history of Diana and Endymion recounted in Lucian's Dialogues of the Gods as well as the poets' concept of the timelessness of beauty that is 'a joy forever'. A labourer enjoying his evening repast celebrates the arrival of the moon-deity Diana, who discovers his sleeping companion.
