Lot Essay

Brass chandeliers of related design survive across north Germany, with some examples featuring the same distinct ring-bearing lion's mask boss (see M. Wiswe, Hausrat aus Kupfer und Messing, Munich, 1979, ill.30 and Prof. Dr. G. Brant, Wohnräume und Möbel aus Alt-Schleswig-Holstein und Lübeck, Berlin, 1922, p.19), while a closely related chandelier, though slightly larger and with two rather than one tier, but almost identical double-headed eagle finial, scrolling 'flat-chased' branches, baluster-turned scrolled arms and the distinct lion's mask boss hung in the choir of the Heiliger Leichnam church in Danzig, now Gdansk (G. Cuny, Danziger Barock, Frankfurt am Main, plate 17).
