A central Italian bronze mortar, possibly Perugia
Late 15th century
The body cast with sacred monogram of Christ IHS, within pilasters depicting foliate bearing vases and ewers, with loop handle, within ropetwist border to the rim, and swags to the base, rim with large old crack
5 5/8in. (14.3cm.) diameter; 4 1/8in. (10.3cm.) high;
with associated bronze double ended pestle -- 6½in. (16.5cm.) long (2)

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Peta Motture, Bells and Mortars, Catalogue of Italian Bronzes in the Victoria and Albert Museum, V&A Publications, 2001. A comparable mortar is illustrated and discussed pages 69-70.

It is interesting to note that the V&A mortar is bereft of the swagged ornament around the base of the present example.
