A SANDSTONE FIGURE OF UMA
KHMER, FIRST HALF OF 9TH CENTURY

Lot Essay

This four-armed Uma or Parvati representation is very unusual as she demonstrates several different styles, which as consequence makes it difficult to date. Nevertheless based on the remnants of the support behind her high cylindrical chignon, a first half of ninth century date seems plausible, as here after Khmer artists did not use these supports anylonger.
