MARY of GUISE, Queen of James V, Regent for Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1560). Letter signed ('V[o]stre bonne Soeur Marie R') to the Earl Marischal, Edinburgh Castle, 17 May 1560, one page, 150 x 205 mm, address panel, 2 contemporary endorsements on verso, traces of seal (signature slightly faded).

A brief letter written shortly before her death, when Scotland was being invaded by the English who were determined to expel the French garrison placed there by her. The Regent informs her correspondent that the bearer will inform him fully of her situation ('at what poynt and estart we and our freyndis are p[rese]ntlie and to declare all our partte of all busynes that has lastlie occurrit').
