CHARLES I, King of England (1625-1649). Autograph letter signed to Prince Rupert ('Nepueu'), 'Oxford this Monday 23: Jan: betweene 6 & 7 at Night [1644]', one page, folio (integral leaf removed, traces of guard, a few tiny splits in central folds, small ink blots, slight fraying at outer edge in lower portion of leaf, a few tiny holes from erosion of ink, lightly browned, contemporary endorsement).
Prince Rupert is urged to 'follow the Rebelles at least as far as Darby or Nottingham & if you fynde they advance before you towards Manchester or Cheshire', fearing that they may take these counties and endanger Lord Newcastle's army. 'In all this I show you by my wish & opinion yet no wais to prescrybe you, but freely to leave you to your owen judgement, as being upon the place'.
The letter reflects the justifiable alarm caused by Fairfax's recapture of Grantham, and spectacular dash to Nantwich, which threatened the landing at Chester of Royalist troops from Ireland, most of whom went over to the Parliamentary colours.
