NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1758-1805). Autograph letter (unsigned but complete, ending 'God Bless you') to Lady Hamilton, Victory, 2 October 1804, 3 pages, 4to, integral address panel, fragment of seal (seal tear in blank area of 2nd leaf, slits, 3 small repairs at edges, traces of guard).

Nelson justifies himself for allowing his proxy vote in the House of Lords to be used by Lord Moira. On January 13th 1804 I signed the proxy and sent it to Davison with the following extract: "I have entrusted him with what I believe I would have entrusted any man and I hope he will be a firm supporter of Mr. Addington's administration" ... I think I should not have given my vote against Pitt. I am no party man'.

Nelson had offered his services to Addington early 1803, and had written to him asking for an allowance of £500 a year for Emma, and an appropriate pension for himself. In May 1804 he was succeeded as Prime Minister by Pitt, without having fulfilled Nelson's requests. Emma appears to have been alarmed that Nelson might have alienated Addington.

At the beginning of the letter Nelson notes that Emma's letter to him travelled 'in a Spanish smuggling boat to the coast of Italy and returned again to Spain'.
