MOORE, Henry (1898-1986). Series of three autograph letters signed and three typed letters signed ('Henry') to Barry Hart, Hoglands, Much Hadham, n.d. and 18 October 1949 - 6 February 1951, including AN AUTOGRAPH SKETCH OF A BRONZE FIGURE, altogether 5 pages, various sizes, autograph, and 3 pages, various sizes, typed, with, as an original enclosure, a photograph of a group of works in Moore's studio (120 x 172mm).
COMMISSIONS FOR INSCRIPTIONS FOR THREE SCULPTURES. The first letter discusses the inscription for 'the Madonna & child sculpture I'm doing for Claydon Church', and encloses 'a very poor photograph of my studio which might just give you a faint idea of the Madonna & child, it's half hidden by the white plaster Family group in front', subsequently sending news from the stone suppliers and a corrected spelling for the inscription. A letter of 6 February discusses the height of a pedestal for another group -- 'The eleven inches height of the pedestal will I suppose look a bit less than that as the curbing around it is one inch down' -- and reports that 'Oliffe Richmond is now cleaning them in the bothy (my dictionary says -- BOTHY: -- in Scotland a place in which unmarried farm servants are housed)'; a subsequent letter reassures Hart 'I'm not now worried about the base height -- I believe what you say'. On 9 February 1951, Moore sends a sketch of a statue, 'My Bronze Figure is very thin and so I think should way [sic] less than 3cwt', and discussing a suitable base: 'If you think it is going to be a bit unsafe still, could we bolt or dowel the concrete base of the Figure to the stone base?'.
