Original maroon cloth-backed boards by Haddon Craftsmen, Inc., spine lettered in silver, upper cover stamped in silver 'S·R', dustwrapper with design after Bill Botten (dustwrapper with a few marks and lightly rubbed at edges, spine a little faded). FIRST BRITISH EDITION. AN INSCRIBED COPY OF RUSHDIE'S BOOKER PRIZE-WINNING SECOND NOVEL, which was subsequently chosen as the 'Booker of Bookers'. Prior to his success with Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie was worked as a freelance copywriter for the advertising agency Charles Barker; one of the accounts that he handled was that of the financial service group M&G, in the course of which he met and became friendly with Roger Jennings who was working for the company. Rushdie would often discuss Midnight's Children (which he was writing) with Jennings, and promised him an inscribed copy, once it was published. This edition followed the first edition published by Knopf in New York in the same year, and was bound from American sheets, but issued in a smaller edition.
