CHURCHILL, Sir W.L.S. Autograph letter signed ('Winston S. Churchill') to Pamela Plowden, Pretoria, 18 November 1899, one page, 4°; envelope with stamp of the Commandant Generaal and postmarks.
CHURCHILL AS A PRISONER OF WAR IN PRETORIA: 'NOT A VERY SATISFACTORY ADDRESS TO WRITE FROM - ALTHOUGH IT BEGINS WITH A P'; Pamela will no doubt have heard what has happened from the Press and Churchill expects to be released 'as I was taken quite unarmed and with my full credentials as a correspondent'. The letter ends with a note of surprising intimacy: 'But I write you this line to tell you that among new and vivid scenes I think often of you'.
The letter, and in particular its claim that he expects to be released, was almost certainly written to be read by the censor. Churchill had been captured on 15 November near Estcourt, and taken to a POW camp at Pretoria.
