CHURCHILL, Sir W.S.L. Autograph letter signed to Pamela, Countess of Lytton, Chartwell, 26 October 1947, 2 pages, 8°.
'WE DWELL AMONG THE RUINS OF THE ONCE GLITTERING STRUCTURES OF OUR YOUTH'. A letter of condolence on the death of Pamela's husband, Victor, 2nd Earl of Lytton, the end of a life of 'great nobility, of high ideals, of distinguished gifts'; setting his death and their septuagenarian generation against the background of post-War Europe, 'when so much in our present existence is shattered & we dwell among the ruins of the once glittering structures of our youth'; and touching on the 'fearful blows' of the deaths of Pamela's sons, and of the happiness they must have enjoyed. Churchill's vision of Pamela in 'this bleak and darkening world' is typically as a consoling light: 'your gleaming spirit will shine the brighter in the gathering gloom'.
