8° (127 x 87mm). Half-tone portrait frontispiece signed by Mao Zedong in Chinese. (Very light scattered spotting.) Original flexible red plastic over paper binding, titled and stamped with a star in blind on the upper cover (slightly marked). Provenance: Patrick Joseph Kelly (inscription below portrait identifying Mao's signature).

Second edition. 'THE LITTLE RED BOOK', SIGNED BY CHAIRMAN MAO.
The recipient was chairman of the Wellington District Communist Party, and was one of a group of three New Zealand party members who met Mao in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, 2 July 1967. The others present were Jan McLeod, a ballet student in China, and her father, editor of the New Zealand left-wing weekly People's Voice. Jan McLeod's copy of 'The Little Red Book', signed on the same occasion, was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 16 November 2001, lot 65. NO OTHER SIGNED COPY OF 'THE LITTLE RED BOOK' CAN BE TRACED AT AUCTION SINCE 1975.

The lot is sold together with 4 modern prints of contemporary monochrome photographs recording the visit (each 151 x 101mm).
