WARTIME SCARCITIES, THE PLEASURES OF MUSIC, HIS HEALTH, AND A BIRTHDAY ORATION FOR MAX PLANCK. It is a shame that Hans Albert's undertakings are suffering with the wartime scarcities, but things will get better. 'The main thing is that there is still enough for your hungry mouths', even if the necessities are hard to come by. Above all, Einstein is pleased by his son's good mood, and that he takes so much pleasure in music: 'That is something that stays faithful for a lifetime'. His own health is fine, though he is not allowed to walk much, and has to be 'besonders gefüttert' [specially foddered]. But his work is fine, and he is taking part in university life: in particular, his oration for Max Planck's 60th birthday, which gave great pleasure to the man himself and others. He would have loved to have seen Tete [his younger son, Eduard] on his first day at school, and asks after him. He looks forward to visiting his sons in six weeks' time, and asks Hans Albert to find out about places he can visit which are at least 1500 metres up.
