EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his son Hans Albert, n.p., 5 April 1920, one page, 4° (excision to lower right corner of leaf, not affecting text).

POSTWAR SUFFERING IN GERMANY. Einstein is pleased to hear that Mileva and his sons will soon be back in Zurich; he is anxious about the last package he sent, as Hans Albert refers to the St Matthew Passion, but not to its other contents. He regrets that he cannot join his sons in Switzerland, as he has only his autumn holidays, and it would be too expensive -- it is already something if he can pay for their upkeep in Swiss currency. Perhaps someday he will be forced to work abroad -- he has trips to Holland and Kristiania approaching, and asks if Hans Albert has any special enquiries about either place. The letter ends with a direct consideration of the economic hardships of post-war Germany: 'It is dreadful how the people here have to suffer. Clothes and shoes are unobtainable, as are most foodstuffs. The mortality rate is awful. The sick are starving in the hospitals ... In any case, I'm happy that you are in Switzerland. For the present it hasn't got so bad there. But they say it's even worse in Austria. God knows how it will end'.
