Lot Essay

Logsdail achieved great success with his panoramic London views, including St Martin in the Fields, 1888, purchased by the Chantrey Bequest (see Christopher Wood, Victorian Panorama, London, 1976, p. 150). Logsdail also spent time in France and Italy; his Venetian views are particularly well-regarded, and show him to be a master of composition and plein air technique. The Usher Gallery, in his home county of Lincoln, held memorial exhibitions of his work in 1952 and 1994. This portrait may well depict his daughter.
