TWO CONTINENTAL SERVICE PATTERN SWORDS
Late 18th early 19th Century
The first with narrow curved fullered blade bearing traces of etched, blued, and gilt decoration including the royal arms of Denmark (stained and with areas of pitting), gilt stirrup hilt with double langets, the outer one bearing a lion's mask in relief, helmet pommel, wooden grip bound with copper ribbon, and black leather scabbard (almost sheared above the long chape) with ornate gilt-brass mounts with embossed decoration; the second probably French naval, with slightly curved hollow-ground blade, with secondary fuller close to rear edge, brass hilt with extra hinged bar to the "slotted" stirrup guard, wire-wound grip of oval cross-section (wire loose), and brass backstap incorporating lion's head pommel
