TWO STEEL-HILTED SMALL-SWORDS
The first French, circa 1750, the second late 18th Century
The first with slender blade of flattened hexagonal section, the forte etched with strapwork interlace, the russet hilt chiselled in relief with trophies of arms and musical instruments framed in rococo cartouches, all against a gilt ground, the grip bound with silver ribbon and twisted wire (some wear and rust-patination); the second with hilt of characteristic form, but with a single oval shell, the latter and the knuckle-guard decorated with piercing, and set throughout with gilt studs, the ground reblackened throughout
