A RARE 140-BORE RUSSIAN SNAP-LOCK BIRDING RIFLE
Late 17th Century
With heavy swamped octagonal sighted barrel cut with six grooves and with lines and triangular designs of punched decoration at the muzzle and breech, the back-sight with pierced and chiselled finial, flat lock with external springs and chiselled details, dog catch behind the cock, pierced and chiselled fence to the pan and manually operated swivelling pan-cover, blackened beech(?) full stock (fore-stock repaired), deep cheek-piece, iron mounts, sliding patch-box cover, iron butt-plate and sling swivels (forward swivel replaced), baluster iron ramrod-pipes, and iron ramrod (iron parts with some surface pitting, mainly on the barrel)
