AN UNUSUAL 40-BORE NEAPOLITAN MIQUELET-LOCK CHILD'S GUN
Dated 1786
With two-stage barrel retained by a pierced silver band and stamped on the octagonal breech with the mark of the Naples royal manufactory (gold lining incomplete) surmounted by two small gold-lined fleur-de-lys marks, silver sights, plain tang, partly engraved lock with chiselled details and dated steel, the shaped plate with brass-filled maker's stamp 'M M', a cross between, moulded figured maple half-stock (fore-end broken), pierced silver mounts cast and chased with shells and scrollwork in relief inhabited by (later?) parcel-gilt portrait busts, wooden trigger-guard, silver fore-end cap and sling mounts, engraved silver ramrod-pipes, and horn-tipped ramrod (cracked, the iron parts with scattered surface pitting), silversmith's mark SN
