A ROMAN MARBLE ARCHITRAVE FRAGMENT
Circa 3rd Century A.D.
Perhaps from an architrave, preserving a triton at the center emerging from waves, with a Nereid on either side, each facing in with her head turned back, her mantle billowing behind, the one to the left riding a sea lion, the one to the right riding a hippocamp, three bands of deeply-drilled bead-and-reel and foliate moldings below, the upper edges preserving two mortises designed to receive metal clamps
