A pair of Paris dark-blue ground two-handled oviform vases
Circa 1820
Painted with mythological scenes of figures in chariots in landscape among clouds, each reverse painted with a still-life with flowers issuing from urns, among devices emblematic of Astronomy and Music from the quadrivrium of the Seven Libral Arts, within richly-gilt roundels tooled with bands of stiffs leaves, the ground gilt with birds above and issuing scrolling foliage, the shoulders gilt with bands of anthemion, the lower parts with stiff-leaf bands, the richly-gilt branch-moulded handles with anthemion terminals, the circular feet stepped, richly-gilt and tooled, the square section bases painted to simulate porphyry (damages, losses and restoration)
