Lot Essay

The delicate vine leaf carving of this sgabello is an example of the finest carving of Turinese intagliatori, who were working for the Royal court of Savoy in the late 18th Century. The most talented was undoubtedly Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo, who was appointed scultore in legno to Vittorio Amedeo III in 1787. Interestingly, a similar trailing vine motif on a frame by Bonzanigo in the Museo Civico d'Arte Antica, inv.787, is illustrated in C. Bertolotto et. al., exhibition catalogue, Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo, Turin, Pinacoteca Civica, 1989-1990, p.40, n.7.
