Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Miklós Boskovits for the attribution, given on the basis of photographs. The anonymous master is the same hand as that responsible for the polyptych (for which see O. Pujmanova, ed., Arte rinascimentale italiana nelle collezioni ceche, Prague, 1996, pp. 42-3) whose central panel is in the church of Santa Maria, Dubi, close to Teplice in the Czech Republic. Professor Boskovits has suggested the possibility that the present pinnacles may also originally have been a part of that altarpiece, although he notes that its wings measure 68 x 20 cm., whereas the present pinnacles are 16.5 cm. wide at their base.
