Born in Sandy Hill in Washington County, New York, James E. Johnson settled in Kinderhook, New York in 1846. Most of his sitters were members of prominent families in Columbia County and known to Johnson, although there is a group of portraits for clients outside of Columbia County, including Sackets Harbor and Albany, New York.
