Lot Essay

The present composition is based on the painting in the collection of H.M. The Queen, Windsor Castle (see W.G. Constable and J.G. Links Canaletto, Oxford, 1976, I, pl. 37, no. 170; II, p. 267). It was likely executed circa 1750 by a pupil turned associate working independently of Canaletto, possibly to Consul Smith's order.

A version of the same design and possibly by the same hand as the present work was supplied as one of a series of Venetian views painted for Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh, 1stBt. of Uppark, Sussex, England.
