Lot Essay

The scene is after Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) and depicts Una, a virgin whose name signifies Truth, with a guardian lion. The conception is from Edmund Spenser's epic The Faerie Queen, 1596, I, Canto III, ll. 44-7. Kauffman's image was engraved by Burke in 1783.
