Lot Essay

Designed in the early 19th century antique or Grecian manner, the prototype for this 'klismos'-backed chair with patera-centred x-frame splat is derived from a set of armchairs belonging to the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d. 1832). A set of twenty-four similar chairs was supplied to Elizabeth Brooke (d. 1809) in June 1803 for Mere Hall, Cheshire, by Gillows of Lancaster. The latter set was sold by the late Mrs Helen Langford-Brooke, Mere Hall, Cheshire; Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 106.
