SOUTHEY, Robert (1774-1843). Four autograph manuscripts (two signed) of poems, comprising 'Ode written in December, 1820', signed, a very elegant transcript, 10½ pages, 8vo, stitched; 'March', 2 pages, 8vo; 'To Charles Lamb On the review of his 'Album Verses' in the Literary Gazette', signed, 1830, 1½ pages, 8vo; and The Shipwrecked Spaniards, an unfinished draft, title and 2½ pages, 4to.
The poems show the range of Southey's verse writing, from the occasional poem addressed to a friend, capturing the 'rarest genius, & ... sterling worth' of Charles Lamb, to the traditional poem of seasonal description ('Rough is thine entrance March!'), to the prophetic vision of the 'Ode', and the historical romance of the 'Shipwrecked Spaniards'.
