Lot Essay

This pair of candelabra in the antique fashion of the French Empire relates to a pair of candelabra delivered on 23 December 1809 by the bronzier Claude Galle (d. 1815) for the Boudoir of the Petit Trianon at Versailles (illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol.II, p.705, fig.21).

With their unusual shallow depth to the reverse, these candelabra were clearly intended as a garniture de cheminée'.
