Lot Essay

Marius Bauer illustrated the prose poem entitled Akëdysséril by P. Villiers de l'Isle Adam in 1894. The etchings thus preceeded his first travel to British India, in 1897/98. There Bauer faced the images of his mind's eye evoked by poetry. He was much impressed by the Oriental pomp of the Indian courts.
(The full set illustrating the poem Akëdysséril consists of eight etchings with text in a portfolio.)
