Lot Essay

Although slightly divergent in detailing to the engraving in Fairbairns Crests, the crest of a Griffin emerging from a Ducal coronet is apparently only used by the Spencer (and Spencer-Churchill) family. This fragment would probably have originally been the cresting of a coat-of-arms, perhaps on a carriage or mirror.
