A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of the author's first solo consular posting, to the island of Fernando Po on the Gulf of Biafra, which had the reputation for being the 'Foreign Office Grave.' Burton was still smarting from the now universally known feud with Speke (then in Central Africa with Grant on an R.G.S. sponsored expedition), his treatment by the East India Co. and disappointment over a Damascus posting.
