2 volumes, 8° (229 x 147mm). Folding map in Vol. II, 2 engraved plates, with advertisements in Vol. II. (Half-titles and last leaves spotted). Original blind-stamped purple-brown cloth gilt, gilt-illustrated covers, (spines faded, slightly frayed at head and foot).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, IN AN UNRECORDED BINDING. Both the first and second issues were bound in green cloth. This purple-brown cloth binding with gilt covers was unknown to Penzer. Burton 'left a great deal to be desired' as a Foreign Office functionary and was on a constant quest for leave, authorized or unauthorized. Once he was granted a Vice Consul in the relaxed atmosphere of Santos he could easily disappear on his travels. Penzer p. 78-80. Casada 33. (2)
