8° (217 x 135mm). Title (printer's imprint on verso); dedication (verso blank); pp.[iii-]ix 'Preface. To the Reader...' dated 'London, October, 1872' (verso blank); pp.[vii-]viii contents, 4ll. printed on one side only with contents pages numbered iii-vi; text pp.1-128, 129, blank, 145, 130-131, 148, blank, 132-133, blank, 149, 134-135, 152, blank, 136-137, blank, 153, 138-139, 156, blank, 140-141, blank, 157, 142-143, 160, blank, 144, 145-472, '73', 474-521, '522-528', 529-548, blank page, 550-692, '6 9', 694-695, blank page; 'appendix' pp.713-717; 'concluding chapter' [718-719], blank page; glossary pp.[721-]722; contents pp.[ix-]xii; list of illustrations pp.[xiii-]xiv; 'Introductory' pp.[xv-]xxiii, final page blank. Occasional proof wood-engraved illustrations, but without all the separately-printed plates and maps. (Repairs to about 14 leaves, generally marginal but the second leaf of the 'concluding chapter' torn with loss to text.) Contemporary purple pebble-grain cloth, titled 'Central Africa.' in gilt on spine (spine slightly faded and lightly soiled), 20th-century cloth box.
A UNIQUE PROOF COPY, WITH AUTHOR'S CORRECTIONS. This appears to be a bound copy of a final text proof (dated 23 September - 15 October 1872) with corrections on most pages, and some interesting and quite extensive sections of text that were omitted from the published work. The most obvious example of this is the 'Preface. To the Reader': 5pp. of highly defensive writing, mentioning that the author had been accused of forging the letters he bought back from Livingstone and that his own past, including his claim to be an American, had nothing to do with the present work.
