JOYCE, James. Dubliners. London: Grant Richards Ltd, [1918].
8° (191 x 124mm). (Scattered light spotting, heavier on half-title and title, pp.193-288 a little browned [but vide infra]). Original burgundy cloth, lettered in gilt on the upper board and spine (extremities lightly bumped, a few light marks, spine a little faded and leant). Provenance: traces of erased signature on upper pastedown.
SECOND PUBLISHED ENGLISH EDITION. 'SCARCE' (Slocum and Cahoon A8, note). Of the 1,250 sets of sheets of the first edition, c.746 were bound up (cf. the previous lot), and 504 were sold to B.W. Huebsch, which were issued as the first American edition (New York: 1916). Huebsch then printed a second American edition in 1917, by which time Grant Richards's stock of the first edition was nearly exhausted. Following pressure from Joyce to publish a second English edition, 'Richards reluctantly agreed to issue a second edition [...] This he did by importing sheets of the 1917 American edition from B.W. Huebsch and binding up just enough sets to satisfy Joyce. It is not known how many copies of this second Grant Richards edition [...] exist, but it is scarce and only two copies have been reported in recent years' (Slocum and Cahoon A8). In the more recent past, only one copy is recorded at auction by ABPC since 1975. For the second English edition leaves [1]1-2 were cancelled and replaced with a new half-title and title; like pp.193-288 of the American sheets, these new leaves were on poorer paper stock, and are therefore more spotted and/or browned. Cf. Slocum and Cahoon Joyce A8 (note) and A10 (note).
