A fine and rare mid 19th-Century French horizontal compound monocular microscope,
signed Microscope Achromatique Universel de Charles Chevalier Ingénieur Opticien Breveté Palais Royal 163 à Paris, in a large fitted mahogany carrying case -- 45.8cm (18in.) wide
See Illustrations
The horizontal body-tube has rack and pinion adjustment to the graduated eyepiece extension tube. The objective is mounted on a right-angle component containing a prism which attaches via a bayonet fitting to the body-tube. The body-tube can be swivelled through to 90° on top of a short brass bracket, stamped 52, and a compass joint can be loosened to allow for use in the vertical position. The main square sectioned limb runs downwards from this bracket and is fixed at the bottom with a steel peg with knurled brass handle. The stage mounting with micrometer fine adjustment, and the large swivelling plano-concave mirror, are both mounted on this limb and adjusted vertically via rack and pinion. The main bracket tilts via a compass joint atop the turned brass column, with the bracket for securing the limb at the foot, on a large, heavy turned brass base. The mahogany carrying case bears a large brass plaque engraved for Henry Whitcomb and contains a tray and a lower level. Accessories in the tray include: a mechanical stage stamped 2, with black glass surface; a simple oxidised brass stage; five eyepieces; an objective collar for vertical use; five objective lenses, one mounted in a lieberkuhn; substage condensor disc with four apertures; substage Nicol prism polariser with tangent screw fine adjustment; an Amichi camera lucida signed CHARLES CHEVALIER DEUX MEDAILLES D'OR EN 1834, with rectangular positive lens; stage micrometer signed Charles Chevalier Palais Royal; nose-mounted bull's-eye; large circular stage attachment; and other items. The heavy microscope is stored in the bottom of the case and has a brass and fruitwood threaded handled to assist with removal; there is a also NACHET ET FILS eyepiece in a card cylinder case, a compartmentalised mahogany box containing talcs, some unused glass sliders and five card cases containing twenty-seven NBS botanical preparations.
