signed on the foot Smith, Beck & Beck 31, Cornhill London and numbered 3792 in a fitted mahogany carrying case --49.2cm. (19 3/8in.) high

The binocular body-tube has rack and pinion adjustment to the two eyepieces, and micrometer fine focusing and a prism to the double nosepiece. The body-tube moves up and down via rack and pinion on a shaped limb, with two square apertures for staged accessories. Beneath the mechanical stage the condensor mount moves up and down via rack and pinion and there is a swivelling plano-concave substage mirror. The main limb tilts between to slightly tapering turned brass columns to a circular base which rotates on a splayed tripod foot. The mahogany carrying case has a brass carrying handle and key and contains a graduated body-tube for monocular use, a table standing bull's-eyes condensor (incomplete) and a separate mahogany accessory case. The accessory case contains: three further eyepieces; Smith, Beck & Beck 1/5, 4/10, 2/3 and 1½in. objectives in brass canisters with engraved lids; small, medium and large lieberkuhns with brass caps; prismatic eyepiece attachment; low power objective tube; a second double nosepiece adapter; two substage condensors and a polariser; three live boxes; tweezers; stage forceps; and other items
