A rare late 19th-Century English portable Assay balance,
signed OERTLING LONDON, fitted into a mahogany case -- 22.2cm. (18¾in.) high
See Illustrations
The two arms of the lacquered brass beam are each graduated 1-9 for use with rider weights. These run along a fixed bar behind the beam and are rotated into position by a knurled handle either side of the case. Fine steel pointers on each end of the beam read off ivorine scales mounted on brass V-brackets to the inside of the case. The two silver pans are on fine wire suspension, removable for storage on two sockel mounts in the back of the case. The fulcrum is on top of a brass column, the base of which is stamped with the signature and 2120; on it are mounted two brass-cased bubble levels and an ivorine scale for the thin brass index arm descending from the fulcrum. A knurled brass knob on the front of the column base can be turned to raise or lower the beam. The inside of the case is lined with cream card; a sliding glazed cover protects the scale and there are two drawers beneath it with ivory pulls, containing: a compartmentalised collection of Assay weights ranging from 1-20cm, spare silver pans, a phial of wire weights, spare pans and other items. The front section of the case is hinged to fold under the scale as a base, secured with two brass hooks and nails, and is mounted with an adjustable screw foot; two further screw feet slide on brass plates into the side of the case.
