Lot Essay

The chairs were commissioned by James France of Bostock Hall, Cheshire, and bear his arms of a 'hurst' with a shield charged with a fleur-de-lis and hanging from a tree. Their Roman-medallion backs, with reed-enriched shields supported on sarcophagus-scrolled trestles, relates to a pattern in The London Chairmakers' and Carvers' Book of Prices, 1802.
