Oviform, the rim and incurved neck enriched in gilt, painted and hand tooled in white slip with panels front and back of Cupid having his wings clipped by Venus or of three putti at mischievous play about a bird's nest, within a pale-blue surround edged by gilt bands, resting on an undulating pâte-sur-pâte convolvulous vine, the brown tinted parian ground enriched with scattered gilt flowerheads

Lot Essay

Lawrence Birks is known for his classical designs in pâte-sur-pâte. The two main panels on this vase demonstrate this signature style. Also shown here are two innovative departures: precise technical control of coloured pâte-sur-pâte and a move towards the sinuous designs associated with Art Nouveau.
