Lot Essay

Urban Life is one of the 3 collages Bancab did when he participated in the Southeast Asian workshop on the subject of the effects of urbanisation. The workshop has an exhibition eventually at Galeri Soemardja and the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1998. The other participating artists were Amanda Heng (Singapore), Zulkifli Yusoff (Malaysia), Mongkol Plienbangchang (Thailand), Tisna Sanjaya and Setiawan Sabana (Indonesia). Apart from the 3 collages, the artist also did an installation called Mandala Urban using sawdust formed into a circle, paper masks, and garbage collected from around Bandung. He later did a performance with the mandala, with the collages as a backdrop.
