Lot Essay

The Ottomans used similar designs to this tile occasionally, as in the panels under windows at the Selimye mosque in Edirne (Öney, Gönül: Turkish Tile Art, in Turkish, Istanbul, 1976, pl.p.88). The colours and technique however in the present tile indicate a Safavid rather than Ottoman provenance.
