Lot Essay

The keep, depicted here is the original of the third castle that was built upon this site in 1446 by Dermot MacCarthy, King of Munster.

Legend has it that in gratitude for supplying four thousand men from Munster to aid Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314, Cormac McCarthy, King of Munster, was given half of the Stone of Scone. This was subsequently incorporated into the battlements and has come to be known as the Blarney Stone.
