The Ivor Novello Award was first presented by The Songwriters Guild, later to become BASCA, in 1955. The award is a tribute to Ivor Novello, one of the most distinguished and sucessful theatrical composers of his time. The statuette is based on a representation of Euterpe, the Greek muse of music and lyric poetry, and was designed by Hazel Underwood in 1955. To this day the figure is still cast in solid bronze and weighs 7lbs 2½ozs.
